Left Ventricular Device (LVAD)

A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that is implanted in patients who have advanced heart failure and are waiting for a heart transplant. This device is powered by a battery, and its mechanical pump aids in pumping blood to the patient's left chamber, ensuring proper blood flow in the body.

The LVAD is not the same as an artificial heart. The artificial heart completely replaces the failing heart, while the LVAD assists the heart in pumping so that the heart transplant can be performed successfully when the time comes. It transports blood from the left ventricle to the aorta, allowing oxygen-rich blood to flow throughout the body. You will be connected to the LVAD controller and power source after the LVAD is implanted. The device will continue to run with the help of the battery when you wake up and will charge while you sleep
